Reporting to the Chair and working under the guidance of instructors, the Instructional Assistant I supports the effective delivery of in-person and online learning within the School of Language and Community Studies. This role provides instructional, administrative, technology, and learner support that enables instructors to focus on teaching while helping learners fully participate in classroom, laboratory, and applied learning activities.

 

The Instructional Assistant prepares and adapts learning materials, assists learners with learning technologies, supports attendance and assignment processes, maintains routine records, and helps coordinate workshops, orientations, field trips, and other learning activities. Working within approved course objectives, instructor direction, College policies, privacy requirements, and established program procedures, this position contributes to a positive and supportive learning environment while supporting student success.

  • Provide learner support and tutorial services by responding to questions and concerns, monitoring student progress, and assisting learners with access to learning technologies.
  • Prepare and organize instructional materials, equipment, and classroom or lab resources to support learning activities.
  • Modify and adapt learning resources and materials based on learner requirements and instructional direction.
  • Support instructors with attendance tracking, assignment organization, and routine communication with learners.
  • Provide assistance and support to learners during classroom, lab, and work-integrated learning activities.
  • Facilitate workshops, orientations, and skill-building activities under instructor guidance.
  • Coordinate logistics for student events, field trips, and applied learning activities.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, learner progress records, and related program documentation.
  • Monitor classroom and lab environments to ensure safety, cleanliness, and compliance with institutional policies and program requirements.

 

 

WHAT YOU BRING

 

  • Post-secondary certificate or diploma in education, educational assistance, adult learning, English language learning, human services, community services, office administration, or a related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum two years of experience supporting learners, instructors, clients, or program operations in an educational, community, settlement, or similar service environment.
  • Proficiency with learning technologies and administrative systems, including learning management systems, virtual classroom tools, email, word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, written communication, teamwork, time-management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain accurate and confidential records, and follow established procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while recognizing when consultation or escalation is required.
  • Commitment to providing learner-centered support and fostering a positive learning environment.

SALARY: AUPE Band Level 6 | Instructional Assistant I | $28.48 – 37.02 hourly reflective upon what you bring AKA your education and experience. An additional 11.2% is paid in lieu of benefits and vacation. This is a casual position with the Alberta Union of Provincial Employees (AUPE).
