ALBERTA INDIGENOUS CONSTRUCTION CAREER CENTRE

Reporting to the Indigenous Career Centre (ICC) Manager, the Indigenous Career specialist focuses on providing culturally-appropriate employment services or educational and career development and supports to Indigenous job seekers or adult learners wishing to work in the construction sectors.  The key function of the Indigenous Career Specialist is to assist Indigenous job seekers to become employed within the construction industry or help them develop job readiness skills.  This role is responsible for liaising between industry employers, Indigenous organizations and communities, ICC College inter-departments, government levels and stakeholders involved with the job seeker. 

The role requires multi-skill levels within a case management support system, ranging from assessments to individual education/career plans and follow-up supports during initial employment stage with mainly Indigenous job seekers.  The Indigenous Career Specialist position requires extensive knowledge of complex workloads within an Indigenous environment and can provide a high degree of diplomacy, excellent communication and relationship skills to ensure successful recruitment and retention between employer and employee. This position may require multiple cross-referrals involving urban, Metis, or on/off First Nation participants and their sponsors/ funding agents.

 

HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

CASE MANAGEMENT

  • Review and maintain up-to-date files in database and assigned caseloads to ensure on-going case management and supports to Indigenous job seeker.
  • Provide assessments to assist clients in obtaining certification as they move to employment.
  • Ensure accurate assessments relevant to each Indigenous job seeker's particular environment and provide appropriate cross-referrals to community resources.
  • Responsible for follow-up supports during initial employment stage with employee

ASSESSMENTS

  • Deliver two assessments:  initial to determine eligibility and comprehensive to identify culturally relevant Learning Map and future employment planning.
  • Understanding of multiple standardized assessment tools: Indigenous Fusion Assessment, various literacy assessments, TOWES, Read Forward, etc. designed to provide valid information on skills, interests, knowledge, literacy /comprehension levels.
  • Ability to utilize effective communication and interviews skills to ensure accurate, culturally-relevant interpretation of all factors (challenges, barriers, supports, observations).
  • Knowledge of community resources, their mandates and eligibility criteria for Indigenous demographic group.
  • Knowledge of financial aid resources and procedures for demographic group.

CULTURAL COMPETENCY

  • Able to articulate and explain Indigenous approach in their professional practice.
  • Demonstrate active community involvement or engagement with Indigenous stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of historic influences affecting demographic group.
  • Established cultural resources and/ or personal practices.

 OTHERS

  • Provide support for the College and the division as required.

 

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Native Studies, education, business, psychology and/ or related experience in an employment program, construction industry or educational institution:  combination of equivalencies may be considered.
  • Must have direct knowledge and/or experience in construction industry.
  • Minimum five years’ experience working within the Indigenous environment, preferably with knowledge/experience of multiple sectors (education, economic development, community services, leadership, etc.).
  • Computer literacy: excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook), electronic database systems, PowerPoint presentations.
  • Specialized knowledge, specifically related to Indigenous approaches, research, and Indigenous environments.
  • Demonstrated capacity for attention to detail and program administration

 

SALARY: This is a casual position ending March 31, 2025.  Salary will be commensurate based on education and experience.
