NorQuesters are difference makers, and we’re searching for someone who can leverage their academic expertise and excellent interpersonal and inter-cultural communication skill-sets to support learner success. Working one-on-one or in small groups with learners in the Engineering University Transfer Certificate program, the Tutor position supports the academic progress of learners by compassionately meeting them where they are at, as well as collaborating with the Learning Support Specialist team and program instructors to ensure effective wrap-around support.

 

Tutors provide in-person and online learning support, and primarily operate out of the inclusive and open learning commons of the Learner Centre. The Tutor position has the opportunity to collaborate with instructional faculty, librarians, program advisors, and learning specialists. Robust, ongoing training and professional development will be provided to support the development of skill-sets related to tutoring, adult education, and working with students with diverse learning needs.

 

HOW YOU'LL MAKE A DIFFERENCE:

 

Provide tutoring support to learners

  • Support first-year post-secondary students in understanding and applying complex course material in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Physics, and Computer Programming by providing tutoring support through multiple delivery method.
  • Foster a welcoming, inclusive environment by adapting tutoring strategies to diverse learning needs and providing friendly front-line support to all students and college community members.

 

Collaborate with learning support specialists, instructors, academic program advisors, and other Learner Centre services to provide wrap-around academic support

  • Work in close partnership with the learning support specialist team members in the development of academic supports for learners.
  • Develop collaborative relationships and on-going communication channels with the Engineering program instructors and student advisors to ensure supports align with curriculum and learner needs.

 

Implement projects and initiatives that support student success

  • In collaboration with learning support specialists, instructors, program advisors and the library, create targeted academic support resources.
  • In collaboration with learning support specialists and Team Lead, evaluate and refine tutoring strategies and academic support programming by analyzing student feedback and trends in help-seeking, success rates, common learning challenges.

 

Fulfill operational requirements to maintain defined service standards

  • Use and manage queuing and scheduling, and capture accurate usage metrics required for decision-making and reporting.
  • Lead, or contribute to, various operational tasks and participate in operational working groups.

 

Contribute to on-going improvements in service quality via professional development

  • Contribute to best practices and ongoing learning and review of relevant program/course content.
  • Engage in development opportunities as part of performance development planning, and participating in peer learning opportunities and case conferencing practices
  • Commit to learning about Indigenization, decolonization and the application of an anti-racist/anti-oppressive lens to the development of practices, and learning and working environments.

 

WHAT YOU BRING:

  • Minimum requirements are 2 years of post-secondary in the field of Engineering, including requisite coursework in Calculus, Linear Algebra, Physics, and Computer Programming.
  • 1 year or equivalent work experience helping others learn, formally or informally, is required (coaching, tutoring, mentoring, teaching, etc); applied knowledge of youth or adult education principles and working with people with disabilities is an asset.
  • High level of digital literacy and ability to learn educational teaching/learning tools quickly is required (e.g. ability to support learners using video conferencing and graphic tablets, etc).
  • Experience effectively communicating (in any setting), with individuals who have English as an additional language is required.

SALARY: $26.06/hr to $34.55/hr. Reflective of what you bring, AKA your education and experience. This is a casual position, which includes an additional 11.2% in lieu of vacation and benefits, and work hours based on learner’s class schedule.
