Research Assistant - ACB Wellness Project

NorQuesters are difference makers and we’re searching for someone dedicated to finding ways forward to join our Faculty of Health Studies as a Research Assistant (RA) to participate in community engagement activities, graphic design, informatics, video editing, report writing and draft manuscript development.

 

Reporting to Project Lead, the RA provides direct research support for our ACB Wellness Project, Improving Mental Health Awareness and Social Service System Navigation for African, Caribbean and Black Communities in Alberta. The project is designed to improve mental health awareness and provide support in navigating the mental health social service systems in Alberta for the African, Caribbean, and Black (ACB) community. This is collaborative project between NorQuest College’s Faculty of Health Studies and Ribbon Rouge Foundation.

 

Under the guidance of the Project Lead, the RA will assist with the completion of project tasks and contributes to success of the project. Working independently, the RA may vet research participants, schedule interviews, search for literature, transcribe or clean data, do community engagement activities, assist with toolkit development, video production, manuscript development and report writing. They may also, under an established framework, code and analyze research data, as well as engage independently in simple data collection tasks and preparation of research presentations. In collaboration with or under the supervision of the Project Leads, the students may participate in complex data collection activities, complex data analysis, writing literature reviews and research reports, and research dissemination. Through their involvement in all phases of the project and all project activities, the RA will develop and refine their research skills, preparing them for a career in research.

  • Technological skills to develop interactive mental health toolkit.
  • Graphic design, video editing, animations, translation and informatic skills.  
  • Work with ACB communities and write research reports, summaries, announcements, and other communications for ACB communities.
  • Vet research participants according to established project eligibility criteria.
  • Arrange time and place for data collection sessions.
  • Conduct basic literature searches and collect copies of relevant literature.
  • Under the guidance of the project’s lead, a Research Analyst, or Project Coordinator, complete face-to-face survey data collection, assisting with interviews or focus groups.
  • Cleaning research data following a prescribed process.
  • Code research data using the framework provided by the project lead.
  • Vet inquiries from community and research partners.
  • Compile and safely store project-related documents including consent forms.
  • Transcribe data recordings.
  • Scan and process forms containing original data.
  • Collect information from other post-secondary institutions.
  • Edit research reports and scan for potential errors.
  • Participate in community engagement activities for the project.

 

WHAT YOU BRING

  • This opportunity is for current and previous NorQuest College students and students from other institutes with relevant experience.
  • An interest in mental health and community engagement
  • Graduate degree completed or in progress in any field. A combination of less education and more research experience may be considered an equivalent.
  • Willingness to complete the TCPS 2 CORE training as condition of employment.
  • Willingness to complete trauma informed care AHS training.
  • Willingness to complete mental health first aide training.
  • Fluence in other languages will be an added advantage (e.g. French, Swahili, Somali, Arabic etc)

SALARY: $26.06 - $28.95 hourly.  Reflective upon what you bring. AKA your education and experience. This opportunity also includes 11.2% in lieu of vacation and benefits.  This is a contract position and an hourly rate will be established relative to individual experience offered and the budget allocated for instruction.
